Meeting of the Basic Sciences Sector Committee – Supreme Council of Universities

Galala University hosted the Basic Sciences Sector Committee of the Supreme Council of Universities in a virtual session via Microsoft Teams, reaffirming the university’s commitment to academic quality and program excellence. The committee convened to review the Faculty of Basic Sciences’ adherence to national quality assurance and accreditation standards and to evaluate proposals for new academic programs—linking curriculum design, laboratory readiness, and student outcomes to Egypt’s higher-education development framework.

Discussion focused on the essentials of a high-performing science curriculum: clear learning outcomes mapped to national competency standards; scaffolded laboratory work that progresses from technique to inquiry; and assessment methods that test not just recall, but analysis, experimental design, and data interpretation. Committee members examined course matrices, moderation procedures, and exam blueprints to ensure alignment across foundational modules in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, with appropriate integration of computational skills and scientific communication.

To strengthen hands-on learning, the review emphasized laboratory infrastructure and safety. The Faculty shared updates on equipment calibration schedules, chemical handling protocols, and maintenance workflows designed to minimize downtime and support consistent teaching quality. Recommendations included expanding instrument-sharing schedules, formalizing pre-lab safety briefings, and adopting standardized lab notebooks to improve traceability of methods and results.

The committee also discussed research-led teaching—encouraging capstone projects, undergraduate research assistants, and problem-based modules that expose students to real datasets and contemporary questions in materials science, environmental chemistry, bioinformatics, and applied mathematics. Faculty development plans featured workshops on assessment design, digital tools for data analysis, and inclusive teaching practices that support diverse learners entering the sciences from varied educational backgrounds.

Quality assurance mechanisms were reviewed in detail: annual program reports, external examiners’ feedback loops, stakeholder consultations with industry and public-sector partners, and tracer studies tracking graduate destinations. The resulting roadmap highlights near-term actions (syllabi harmonization, rubric updates, lab SOP refresh) and medium-term goals (pilot interdisciplinary electives, expand research placements, enhance analytics for student progression). Galala University will continue to work with the Sector Committee to implement these improvements and document measurable gains in student learning and program effectiveness.

By aligning academic innovation with robust governance, the meeting advanced sdg4 (Quality Education) through competency-based curricula and evidence-driven assessment; sdg9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by linking laboratory capacity and computational tools to applied problem-solving; and sdg17 (Partnerships for the Goals) via sustained collaboration among universities, reviewers, and sector stakeholders.
