Program Overview

The development, management, and responsible use of sustainable energy resources is a critical national and global issue. This program at GU prepares engineers who deal with energy efficiency, alternative energy systems, and energy services. Students learn about renewable energy sources and reducing the amount of energy used by communities. The Power Engineering program teaches students how electric power is generated, transmitted, and distributed. Classes analyze power and distribution systems, how they work, and ways to improve them. Energy and power engineers work with various natural resources, like fossil fuels or petroleum, and try to increase renewable or sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar and wave power, biomass, hydroelectricity, or nuclear power. Professionals focus on finding more efficient and clean ways to supply energy and develop innovative technologies and methods to meet the global need for electricity.

This program in the Department of Electrical Engineering at GU introduces the student to the typical and new energy resources and how to produce, distribute and manage this energy economically. In this program, the student will learn to combine sustainable thinking with deep technical competence. He/ she will gain practical experience through laboratory experiments in combination with computer exercises. This program is highly needed, especially with the multiplicity of traditional and renewable energy systems, their interdependence and the need to manage the energy system. Power management engineers will have an active role in the transition towards a sustainable energy system. He/ she will work on developing technology, models, and smart control of sustainable systems for energy generation, storage, or distribution at the local, regional, or (inter)national level. 

Degree Requirements

In order to graduate, you need to study the following:

University Requirement:(14+6) = 20 Credit Hours.

General Field Requirement: (33 + 0) = 33 Credit Hours.

General Specialty Requirement: (64+3) = 67 Credit Hours.

Minor Specialty Requirements: (30+15) = 45 Credit Hours.

Total: (141+24) = 165 Credit Hours.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this unique program will possess the following learning outcomes:

  • Model and analyze electrical power systems and electrical machines.
  • Select, analyze and control appropriate driving systems for different energy applications.
  • Model, analyze and design energy systems by applying energy concepts of Thermal-fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Material Properties.
  • Design mechanical energy systems using appropriate materials via both traditional and computer-aided tools.
  • Select proper mechanical equipment according to the required specification.

  • Senior Engineer
    Working in conventional and renewable, transmission and distribution companies.
  • Energy Consultant
    Joining electrical sector entities such as generation (conventional and renewable), transmission, and distribution companies.
  • Assistant Energy Management Engineer
    Proposing and assisting with ideas that provide value for money that can reduce energy costs. Also, researching innovative solutions to reduce the carbon footprint.
  • Production Manager
    Handling the big decisions required for the power sector, and they also manage the power operations carried out in the field.
  • Service Maintenance Engineer
    A Service Maintenance Engineer is consulted for all the technical details and other matters regarding the power operations. They evaluate the project procedures and calculate the risk factors.
  • Project Manager
    Project Managers are the head of power operations carried out at the local level. They are responsible for the proper estimation and scheduling of power projects. They also write any project-related reports for the officials and government records.
  • Senior Project consultants
    The post of Senior Project Consultants accounts for managing the power projects at a higher level. They supervise and provide consultancy to multiple power projects at a time. 
  • Engineering Manager
    An engineering manager’s responsibilities include planning and execution of power operations and assisting their team in carrying out the power plan.
