The core of our educational system

Credit Hour

The credit hours system applies to all academic programs, except for the Medicine program, which depends on the integrated program. The Reference Framework for Programs preparation highlights the correlation between the three systems (Semesters- Credit Hours- European System). Programs align with the SWL (Student Workload).

Studying under the Credit Hours System

English is the Official Language of Instruction, and the list of each program sets out a way to make sure the student is fluent in English. Textbooks, exercises, and exams are all in English.

All Programs follow the Credit Hours system; one credit hour is equivalent to the contact hours as follows:

  • One Hour weekly lecture for one semester (15 Weeks)
  • Two Hours Assignments for one semester (15 weeks)
  • Three Hours Lab for one semester (15 weeks)

One hour is equivalent to 50 minutes of actual tutoring and 10 minutes break

  • Each course and program in this list are consistent with the European System for The Transfer and Aggregation of Approved Hours (ECTS), used to set up a descriptive value of the requirement expressed in terms of student workload (SWL). It is “the number of working hours normally required to complete learning activities in the course modules to achieve their expected educational results."

The total student workload consists of two components:

  • Regular student workload, which is the specific credit hours for the course.
  • Irregular student workload is when students spend on their self-study, completing course assignments, and preparing for all types of examinations, such as evaluation workload.
  • One ECTS unit is equivalent to 25 hours of the student's total working hours.
  • Each 15-week academic class must match 30 ECTS units.
  • As an agreed requirement, the total student workload needs to be 750 hours per semester or about 50 hours of the entire student workload per week.

Expected values for each Semester:

  1. 16 to 19 credit hours.
  2. 25 to 28 hours of credit hours per week for 15 weeks.
  3. 750 hours total student workload.
  4. In the range of 30 ECTS units
  5. The distribution of course grades is the responsibility of the curriculum designer for the final decision. It depends on the course's nature. Some courses are theoretical; Thus, more grades can be given for examinations, while other courses are practical; Therefore, more grades get distributed to projects, exercises, and laboratories.

Educational Levels

Whenever the student completes 20% to 25% of the program requirements, he moves from one level to the next level. Some programs may require five levels instead of four, depending on the study's nature and duration.

Semesters and Students' Registration

The academic year consists of three semesters:

      • The first main semester (Autumn): starts on Saturday of the third week of September where it lasts for 15 weeks of teaching followed by three weeks of exams, and the courses get registered within three weeks before the beginning of the semester
      • The second main semester (Spring): starts in February and lasts for 15 weeks, followed by three weeks of exams. Courses get registered within one week before the beginning of the semester.
      • Summer semester: Starts in late June or early July and lasts for seven weeks, followed by one week of exams. Courses get registered within a week before the beginning of the semester.

Duration of the Study varies according to programs' requirements.

  • The study's minimum duration is based on the program's study period and ensures that all graduation requirements get fulfilled.
  • The study's maximum duration is twice the number of classes scheduled for study, which does not include on-hold semesters for reasons acceptable to the university, after which the student gets dismissed from the university.

Requirements for Registering Courses

  • The student can register for courses in the main semesters with about 16 credit hours per semester.
  • The total number of credit hours may be increased to a maximum as per the following rules and upon approval of the academic supervisor as follows:
    • Up to 21 credit hours for a student with a cumulative total greater than or equal to 3.00.
    • Up to 21 credit hours for a student with a cumulative total greater than or equal to 3.00.
    • Up to 18 credit hours for a student with a cumulative total greater than or equal to 2.00, but less than 3.00.
    • A student with a semester's cumulative GPA less than 2.00 must reduce the number of hours approved in the next semester, which may not exceed 14 credit
    • and is given a warning),
    • The student can register for courses in the summer semester up to 6 credit hours or two courses, whichever is greater, and after the academic guide's approval.
    • The student can register for one additional course on the allowed load, if this will lead to his graduation, after the academic guide's approval, provided that this course is on the table of his program.
    • Late registration of courses is not final unless there are vacant places. The student must abide by the Academic Affairs Council's recommendations approved by the University Council on this subject.
    • Students studying non-academic degrees can register for courses provided they pay the tuition fees for these courses. The student receives a statement of the courses, and the grades, as per these regulations.
    • Degree and Non-Degree students can register as Auditors in some courses if vacant places are vacant after paying the applicable academic service fees. Students registered as listeners are not allowed to take the final exam of the course.

 Add / Drop Courses 

  • The student can add a course in the first week of the main semesters or the first three days of the summer semester.
  • The student can drop the courses registered with the corresponding tuition fee refund until the end of the second week of the main semester or the end of the first week of the summer semester.
  • Adding or dropping courses should not violate the minimum or the maximum number of credit hours recorded per semester.

Courses Withdrawal

  • Students can withdraw from any course they have enrolled in during the first ten weeks of the main semester or the first five weeks of the summer semester.
  • The student does not fail in the course he withdraws; on the condition that the withdrawal request is completed and approved within the specified period.
  • The student receives a W grade for the withdrawal course and can register for this course (total attendance and performance of all activities, including examinations) in the following classrooms.
  • For the elective course, the student can change it in the subsequent classes if they fail to pass or withdraw. It is subject to the approval of the academic advisor and the requirements of his program.
  • For students who do not receive a scholarship, tuition fees for the course withdrawn cannot get refunded. The next time a student registers for this course, he must pay the total tuition fees. The student, who withdraws from an entire semester without enrolling in any courses, must pay the minimum tuition fee equivalent to the 12-hour fee.
  • For students who have received a scholarship, these credit hours will get deducted from their scholarship, and they will be entitled to register for this course free of charge only once.

Incomplete Courses

  • If the student does not attend the final exam of the course in a semester with an excuse accepted by the Academic Affairs Council and approved by the University Council, the course is considered incomplete.
  • The student receives I grade in the unfinished course until the exam is conducted in this course. The student who does not take the final exam next time available for this course will receive an F grade in the course & the I grade will not be included in calculating the student's GPA.
  • The student will take the exam the next time available for the examination, after paying the re-examination fee, equivalent to the one-hour credit fee, if applicable. This final exam's grades are added to the semester's grades to calculate this course's overall appreciation.

Courses Evaluation

  • The grades of each course are distributed as a percentage of overall grades. These grades include student activities, grades of the mid-term examination, practical exam grades, and final exam grades.
  • The student must attend at least 75% of the total hours for the course to attend the final exam.
  • For the student to pass a course, the minimum score he must receive in the final exam is 30% of the total grades of the final exam; otherwise, the student will fail in this course regardless of the total grades he has received in this course and will receive an F grade). It does not apply to courses where there is no final exam.
  • Students fail if they receive an F grade of less than 60% of the course grades. He is denied the final exam due to exceeding the absence or fraud rate… etc., or did not attend the final exam without providing an excuse accepted by the program coordinator and approved by the Academic Affairs Council.
  • The grading system is Pass or Fail for courses that have (0) credit hours. The student receives an estimate but does not enter the calculation of the cumulative rate. For passing these courses, the student must get more than 60% of the course marks.

Courses Grading System

Each course's GPA is calculated based on the student's grades during his studies (Assignments – Mid-Term Exam – Practical Exam – Final Exam). The following table shows how the GPA gets calculated through the grades obtained, where the student must obtain the minimum grade D passing the course, used to calculate the student's GPA).

For other courses in which the student registers as an Auditor, it is only required to pass the course (courses with zero credit hours, courses not included in the GPA). The course estimates will be as follows:

Retaking Courses

The student can retake a course of study and an exam to improve if his or her assessment in this course meets the minimum pass requirement under the following rules:

In case of improving:

        • The student receives the highest grade in the course after the retake. This estimate will calculate the student's GPA, provided that the retake appears on the student's certificate.
        • The maximum number of times a student can repeat it for improvement is five times during the study period, except for improved courses to get out of the academic warning or meet graduation requirements.
        • The student must pay the full tuition for the credit hours corresponding to the courses in which the courses get optimized.

In case of failing:

        • If the student failed in a course (he received an F grade), this course should be returned (total attendance and performance of all activities including exams), as per the following rules:
        • The maximum grade for a retaken course is +B.
        • The student receives the course rating after the retake, which gets calculated in the student's GPA, provided that the retake appears in the student's certificate.
        • The student must pay the full tuition for the credit hours corresponding to the returned courses.
        • If the student retakes a course, they must re-evaluate the course until it gets thoroughly re-evaluated. The course grade gets recalculated.

Minimum Number of Students for active courses

  • The minimum number of students needed to open a course is ten students, or 75% of the number of students enrolled at this level of the program, whichever is lower.
  • The minimum number of students needed to open an optional course is five students or 25% of the number of students at this program's level, whichever is lower.
  • The opening of courses depends on the availability of teaching staff and the allocation of the necessary means.
  • The program coordinator may grant exceptions to these limits if necessary, with the university administration's approval.

Exams Schedule and Information

Setting the schedule for midterm examinations:

  1. The exam's date for the first semester gets based on: 
  • Beginning of the academic studies (First week)
  • End of the Semester

Accordingly, the mid-term exam gets scheduled for the seventh week of the beginning of the academic study.

  • The mid-term exam date gets added to the announced academic calendar for students and faculty members.
  • The examinations' preparation is announced during the faculty's weekly meetings to begin in the seventh week of the beginning of the first academic semester.
  • The authorized committee completes the procedures by sending e-mails to the academic departments to share the exams' answers sheets. 
  • More requests are received for the exams' answers sheets for the artistic fields.
  • The authorized committee requests the purchase of answer sheets and special orders for the performance of examinations.
  • Stamps are placed on the answer sheets to distinguish them.

Fulfilling the Examinations' Preparations

  • The Student Affairs Department receives the documents and answers sheets for the exams
  •  The documents and sheets are then distributed to the academic programs in the required numbers to the authorized program representative.
  • Each program stores the answer sheets and exams' documents
  • The academic results are kept with the professor of each course and the program director. 
  • The results get added to the final evaluation after examinations of the semester. The final results get calculated and approved by the program manager
  • The final results will be sent to the Student Affairs Department to be recorded in students' academic records after the exams.

 Students get informed of the date of their exams by sending an e-mail of the selected week of exams, which has been already announced, as per the academic calendar. Students get informed informing to set a meeting with the program director to know each subject's exact date
