 English Language is absolutely central to our lives and the world we live in. Through language we form relationships, teach our children and manage our day-to-day lives and jobs. At GU you will build your English language skills to better convey your ideas.

The English language has established itself as one of the most widely spoken languages, with over 300 million native speakers and a far higher number of second-language speakers. Accordingly, it is no surprise that every year, thousands of prospective students choose to study the English language.

This program at GU helps learners to fully master the English language according to the highest European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). This program offers a number of courses that develops oral expression, presentation skills, grammatical rules and different writing styles which can be used across many practical areas. This program is designed for non-native English speakers, who want to gain fluency and master proficiency in the English language.

The BA of Applied English Language is the ideal undergraduate degree program for those wishing to major in Linguistics, Literature, and Translation Studies in an international context. The program is designed for those interested in studying English as a subject in its own right. Students will learn about the many ways, in which English is used around the world today. Studying this  program at GU also provides students with  an excellent opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in a real-world setting. This is done, for instance, through the practice of translation and interpreting.

Program Requirements

To graduate from this program, students must study 128 credit hours, which are classified into 3 different levels as follows:

  • University Requirements include 20 credit hours, divided into 14 credit hours for 7  mandatory courses and 6 credit hours for 3 elective courses.
  • Faculty Requirements include 24 credit hours, divided into 15 credit hours, for 5 mandatory courses and 9 credit hours for 3 elective courses.
  • Specialized Requirements include 84 credit hours, divided into 60 credit hours for 20 mandatory courses and 24 credit hours for 8 elective courses.

The Program's Learners will acquire a range of skills suitable for language teaching, translation, interpreting, and editing and transferable in many settings across any sector that requires identifying real-world problems and effectively communicating solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will possess the following learning outcomes:

  • Use English grammatical rules and apply them in different writing styles.
  • Differentiate between literary and non-literary texts written in English.
  • Translate texts from and into English accurately.
  • Analyse and criticize oral and written texts, in English.
  • Compare between the culture of foreign languages studied and between the culture of Arabic language and heritage.
  • Master the English language and use it as means of communication in global and local contexts.
