International Cultures Bazaar – Galala University
Galala University brought the world to campus with the International Cultures Bazaar, a vibrant showcase of food, music, dance, and handmade crafts hosted at the Pharmacy Parking Area. The one-day event turned the space into an open-air gallery of traditions and everyday culture, inviting students, faculty, and staff to explore how communities express identity—through recipes passed down at home, artisanal techniques, folk rhythms, and national dress.
Beyond the color and sound, the bazaar was designed as a learning experience. Each country table included short explainers on customs, languages, and social norms, with student volunteers on hand to answer questions and share stories behind the dishes and artifacts. Quick “culture cards” introduced attendees to greetings, celebrations, and etiquette, reinforcing that cultural literacy starts with curiosity and respect.
Live performances drew steady crowds throughout the afternoon—traditional songs, drumlines, and folk dances that invited participation rather than passive viewing. Between sets, micro-talks highlighted the historical roots of certain foods, the symbolism of patterns in textiles, and the role of craftsmanship in community livelihoods. Faculty facilitators connected these moments back to classroom learning in humanities, social sciences, and design, underscoring the value of experiential education.
The bazaar also emphasized inclusion. Wayfinding and stall layouts prioritized accessibility; information cards used clear language; and a “try-something-new” corner encouraged visitors to learn a simple phrase from another language or attempt a basic dance step. The result was a welcoming atmosphere where students from different backgrounds shared space, swapped perspectives, and discovered common ground.
By positioning cultural exchange as both celebration and curriculum, the event advanced several Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4 (Quality Education) through hands-on, co-created learning; SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by elevating diverse voices and ensuring equitable participation; and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by fostering dialogue, mutual respect, and a campus culture where differences are engaged constructively. Together, these outcomes align with Galala University’s mission to prepare globally minded graduates who value community, collaboration, and responsible citizenship.
