As part of its commitment to providing students with hands-on exposure to creative industries, the Fashion and Textile Design Program at Galala University organized an educational visit to Tazgah for Jewelry Making, a Cairo-based studio that merges design innovation with traditional craftsmanship.
At Tazgah, jewelry is created with a deep appreciation for design, materiality, and heritage inspiration. The studio s work reflects Egypt’s long-standing tradition of metalwork and decorative artistry, integrating cultural motifs into contemporary accessory design. The visit offered students a close-up experience of how craft and design coexist in a professional setting, from conceptual sketches to the final polished piece.
During the visit, students interacted with artisans and designers who shared insights about the creative and technical processes behind jewelry production. They observed how heritage references are thoughtfully reinterpreted into modern forms an approach that resonated strongly with the students’ studies in fashion and textile design.
Many students expressed feeling more confident in exploring accessories and jewelry as extensions of their fashion design practice, rather than focusing solely on garments. Several participants shared their intention to integrate jewelry-inspired elements into their upcoming design projects. The visit encouraged students to adopt a multi-material perspective combining garments with accessories, craft with design, and form with function.
From an academic standpoint, the visit reinforced the program’s belief in the importance of experiential learning. By engaging directly with craft-based environments, students were able to connect theoretical design concepts with real-world creative practice, enriching their understanding of design as both an artistic and cultural endeavor.
