Spreading Diabetes Awareness, Providing Check-ups: Medical Students Lead Community Outreach

Tuesday, December 5th, 2023

Understanding the widespread and growing occurrence of diabetes and the importance of early detection, students from the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program organized an impactful community outreach event for World Diabetes Day.

In collaboration with the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing, the event featured informative sessions spreading awareness about symptoms, risk factors and complications related to the different forms of diabetes. Medical students also provided free check-ups and lab tests to attendees, promoting early diagnosis in the community.

The session emphasized that diabetes can impact people of all ages, with cases rising globally. Experts from the collaborating faculties gave talks on managing diabetes through balanced nutrition, physical activity, medication and regular monitoring.

Attendees actively engaged during the screening sessions and appreciated this health drive by the university. Many who were flagged as potentially having diabetes pledged to pursue further medical diagnosis.

Through the collective efforts of GU students and faculty, the University has set an example of what it means to be actively engaged for the community’s welfare.
