Galala University has officially co-chaired the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Egypt, marking a major milestone in its efforts to advance sustainable development across Egypt and the region. SDSN Egypt is coordinated and hosted by the American University in Cairo and Galala University.
The SDSN is a global initiative operating under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. It mobilizes the world’s largest knowledge network to accelerate action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Joining this network provides Galala University with access to a powerful platform that enables collaboration among academia, government, civil society and the private sector.
A Strategic Partnership for Impact
As a co-host institution of SDSN Egypt, Galala University plays a lead role in shaping the national network’s agenda. The network brings together members from higher-education institutions, research centers and non-governmental organizations, all committed to working on sustainable development challenges in Egypt. Among the founding members are institutions such as the American University in Cairo and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport.
By joining, Galala University commits to advancing three core pillars of SDSN Egypt’s mission:
• Promoting impactful research that addresses local and regional sustainability issues.
• Supporting evidence-based policymaking and the translation of research into actionable outcomes.
• Advancing education for sustainable development, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to lead in a changing world.
Why This Matters
Located on the Galala Plateau overlooking the Gulf of Suez, Galala University was founded in 2020 and has already established itself as a forward-looking institution offering future-based programs aligned with labor market needs. Its participation in SDSN Egypt amplifies its sustainability credentials—most notably their ongoing work in supporting SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), through efforts such as the “Galala Green Campus” initiative and climate-change research partnerships.
Through this new role, Galala University and its partners in SDSN Egypt aim to catalyze sustainability pathways in Egypt, from greener energy and infrastructure solutions to enhanced education and skills development, supporting the country’s broader agenda for sustainable growth.
Looking Ahead
With this formal membership in place, Galala University will co-lead initiatives, host collaborative workshops and publish research results that contribute to national and regional sustainability goals. The strengthened link between higher-education institutions and policy-makers signals a step-change in Egypt’s ability to respond to pressing global challenges — climate change, sustainable cities, resource management and more.
