Galala University Launches the International Program “Climate Change, Food Scarcity, Water Scarcity, and Their Impact on Migration” in Collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Health, Migration, and Poverty (NIHMP)

The Biotechnology Program at Galala University, in collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Health, Migration, and Poverty (NIHMP) and under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Cairo, proudly launched the international program “Climate Change, Food Scarcity, Water Scarcity, and Their Impact on Migration.”
The program is hosted at Galala University from November 2 to 5, 2025, as part of the ongoing scientific partnership between Egypt and Italy to address global environmental and health challenges.

This initiative forms part of a broader NIHMP project titled “Climate Change and Health: A Model for a Sustainable Future for Egypt.”
The project aims to build capacities and develop training programs focused on the impacts of climate change on health and migration, particularly in supporting vulnerable populations and environmental migrants in Egypt. It is conducted in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

The program features an exceptional lineup of experts from Italy, Egypt, and the United States, including:

Dr. Maria Giuseppina Lecce, Director of NIHMP

Dr. Domenico Di Martinis, Scientific Attaché, Italian Embassy in Cairo

Prof. Joel Gordon, University of Arkansas, USA

Prof. Laura Gierciu, NIHMP
alongside distinguished Egyptian academics such as:

Dr. Mahmoud Roshdy, Director of the Climate Change Research Institute

Dr. Mohamed Youssef, Head of the Geology Department, Desert Research Center

Prof. Abdel Kawi Khalifa, Professor of Civil Engineering, Ain Shams University, former Minister of Utilities and former Governor of Cairo

Dr. Nermin Ashour, Director of the Sustainability and Green Transformation Unit, Egyptian Health Care Authority

Over four days, the program included sessions and lectures on water scarcity, food security, and climate migration, in addition to applied studies in remote sensing, sustainable agriculture, and water resource management.

By hosting this international event, Galala University reaffirms its commitment to serving as a global platform for scientific exchange in the fields of health, environment, and climate — supporting Egypt’s efforts to develop sustainable, research-based solutions for a better future.
This initiative also offers Galala students a unique opportunity to engage with leading international experts, strengthening their environmental awareness and preparing them to tackle future global challenges.
