Galala University Hosts Webinar on Urban Growth, Connectivity and Sustainable Transport Systems in Egypt
In March 2022, Galala University organized a comprehensive webinar titled “Urban Growth, Connectivity and Sustainable Transport Systems in Egypt.” The event brought together urban planners, transportation experts, academics, and government representatives to examine how rapid urbanization and evolving mobility needs are reshaping Egypt’s cities—and how sustainable transport systems can meet those demands.
Speakers began by outlining the current challenges facing Egypt’s expanding urban corridors, including traffic congestion, inefficient public transit, fragmented transport networks, and rising emissions. They highlighted how new urban developments such as the Galala Plateau and other growth zones are placing greater demands on connectivity—both within city systems and between urban nodes across the country.
The event then focused on key solutions and strategic interventions:
-
Multimodal transport integration, combining metro, bus rapid transit (BRT), light rail, and non-motorized options to enhance accessibility and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
-
Smart mobility technologies, such as real-time data systems, IoT-enabled infrastructure, and vehicle electrification, which can improve efficiency, safety and sustainability.
-
Sustainable infrastructure design, including transit-oriented development (TOD), green corridors, pedestrian-friendly zones and climate-resilient urban planning, to ensure the built-environment supports healthier mobility patterns.
-
Policy, governance and stakeholder collaboration, emphasising that lasting change requires alignment between universities, municipal bodies, transport authorities, industry partners and civil society.
The webinar concluded that addressing connectivity gaps in Egypt’s urban blueprint is critical for achieving sustainable growth and meeting broader objectives—such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, enhancing mobility for underserved populations and supporting inclusive economic development.
Galala University reaffirmed its commitment to contributing research, education and collaborative action in this space—aligning with national visions for sustainable cities and linking its work to the broader framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
