This specialized program at GU qualifies graduates to work in dental laboratories. It provides the students with the basic sciences focusing on acquiring practical skills and mastering the use of dental equipment and devices based on a full understanding of the engineering fundamentals as well as full training in terms of operation and maintenance. The program also provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of the construction of complete and partial dentures whether acrylic or cobalt chrome. Students practice construction of fixed prosthesis including metal-related ceramics, complete ceramics as well as the prosthesis supported by dental implants. Moreover, the program provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge to fabricate different orthodontic devices used in dentistry. Furthermore, students learn how to builds facial and maxillofacial prostheses, such as ears, nose and eyes. Additionally, students will be able to perform different oro-maxillofacial radiographic pictures according to the prescription of dentist. Students will learn how to be dental assistants in clinics as well as administer comprehensive advice on oral and dental hygiene for the patients according to their needs. Those who complete the program successfully will be given the title of “Dental Prosthesis Technologist”.
Dental Prosthesis Technologists work in a commercial dental laboratory that belongs to dental clinics or they can be self-employed. They are masters of their craft and are essential members of the dental-health care team. They receive ,for example, dental impressions and prescriptions from the dentist, apply their skill and expertise in fabricating the prescribed appliance then return it to the dentist for placement in the patient’s mouth.
Our program offers a comprehensive education with specialized academic staff and a multidisciplinary approach which enables our students to gain the highest level of professional experience while studying in well-equipped labs with modern infrastructure designed for practical courses. To be successful, you’ll need to display meticulous attention to detail and to merge technical skills with artistry. Much of your work will depend on hand skills to fine-tune each piece to exact specifications. You'll also work with specialized equipment in the laboratory and use different materials as porcelain, metals as well as acrylics. You have to remember that each patient is unique so absolute precision is essential to make sure that the device is comfortable and effective.
To graduate from this program , you need to study the following credit hours:
University Requirement: 20 Credit Hours.
General Field Requirement: 27 Credit Hours.
Major Requirements: 83 Credit Hours.
Total: 130 Credit Hours.
Upon graduation, you will be able to:
- Use tools and materials to fabricate various dental prostheses at the professional level.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the manufacture of fixed and removable dental prostheses, complete and partial dentures whether acrylic or cobalt
- Build prostheses supported by dental implants such as crowns and overdentures.
- Build active and passive orthodontic.
- Build facial and maxillofacial prostheses, such as ears, nose, and eyes to reconstruct the faces of patients damaged by accident or disease.
- Perform different radiographic pictures according to the prescription of the dentist.
Graduates can work in dental laboratories, companies that provide technical equipment related to dental health, as well as integrate into a dental clinic or work individually. They will compete in national and regional markets.
