Studying Medicine & Surgery Program at GU is equipped with the most advanced clinical laboratories’ skills that have a vast range of equipment including many high-fidelity clinical human simulators to help develop clinical skills in a real hospital or home. The MBBCh program adopts the latest highly effective medical education strategies applied in the international medical schools, which include:

  • Student-centered education.
  • Integrated interdisciplinary.
  • Active teaching methods in small groups (PBL, TBL and CBCL, and others).
  • Problem-solving rather than memorization and recall.
  • Integration of basic medical sciences courses in the pre-clerkship phase (first three years), thus reducing repetition and conflicting information.
  • Early exposure to a clinical study, from the first year.
  • Courses to develop personal and professional skills.

Degree Requirements

The duration of study for an MBBCh degree is five years; divided into two phases:

  • The first stage (Pre-Clerkship): Includes the first three years divided into six semesters. The duration of each semester is 15 weeks of teaching in addition to a period of preparation and examinations.
  • The second stage (Clinical Clerkship): Includes two years of clinical teaching in rotation between clinical departments. Each year consists of 40 teaching weeks in addition to a period of preparation and examination.

The study is followed by two years of compulsory training as an Internship doctor.

The graduate is then granted a license to after-exam practice medicine and is registered by the Medical Syndicate.
The total credit hours for the program is 209 Credit Hours, including the following:

  • 20 Credit Hours of University Requirements (14 compulsories and 6 electives); students are not permitted to choose any elective course that is later taught in the Faculty of Medicine.
  • 189 Credit Hours of Faculty Requirements (185 compulsories and 4 clinical electives).

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will possess the following learning outcomes:

  • Identify major health risks in the community, endemic diseases and common chronic diseases.
  • Identify the epidemiology of common diseases within the community and apply methodological means that help to reduce their occurrence.
  • Provide care for various groups including pregnant women, newborns, infants, adolescents and elderly.
  • Describe the natural structure of the body and its main organs; and explain its functions.
  • Identify the different causes of the disease and explain the ways they affect the body.
  • Use health information systems to improve the quality of patient care.
